Build a Headphone Listening Chain

A well-configured plugin chain transforms headphone listening. This guide walks you through building a chain that addresses the three main headphone problems: unnatural stereo imaging, frequency response deviations, and volume-dependent tonal shifts.

Audio Source
→ Crossfeed (natural stereo image)
→ Parametric EQ (frequency correction)
→ Loudness Compensation (volume-aware tonal balance)
→ Limiter (prevent clipping)
→ Output

Each plugin addresses a specific issue:

PluginProblem it solves
CrossfeedHeadphones present hard left/right separation — unnatural compared to speakers
Parametric EQYour headphone’s frequency response deviates from the target curve
Loudness CompensationHuman hearing is less sensitive to bass and treble at lower volumes
LimiterEQ boosts can push peaks above 0 dBFS, causing clipping
  1. Add Crossfeed first

Go to the plugin rack (Studio tab / Plugins screen) and add a Crossfeed plugin.

    Recommended starting settings:

    • Mode: Bauer (simplest, most natural)
    • Bauer Cutoff: 700 Hz (default)
    • Bauer Feed: 4.5 dB (default)

This blends a small amount of the left channel into the right and vice versa, simulating how speakers interact with both ears.

  2. Add Parametric EQ

Add an EQ plugin after the crossfeed. Either:

    • Use the Headphone EQ wizard to auto-generate filters for your model
    • Manually add filters to taste

The EQ corrects your headphone’s frequency response to match the Harman target curve.

  3. Add Loudness Compensation

Add a Loudness Compensation (Fletcher-Munson) plugin. Set your typical listening volume:

    Listening levelPlayback volume setting
Quiet (late night)-40 to -30 dB
    Normal-25 to -15 dB
    Loud-10 to 0 dB

The plugin automatically boosts bass and treble at lower volumes to compensate for the ear’s reduced sensitivity (equal-loudness contours).

  4. Add a Limiter at the end

Add a Limiter plugin as the last in the chain.

    • Ceiling: -0.5 dBFS (leaves headroom for DAC intersample peaks)
    • Release: 50 ms (default)

This prevents any clipping from EQ boosts or loudness compensation.

  5. Save as a preset

Save this chain as a preset (e.g., “Headphone Daily”) so you can quickly load it later.
